WWaM meets SWEAT: Our Solidarity Walk with Sex Workers

womensmidnightwalk

As we welcome in 2025, here's a reminder of the great energy from our last walk of 2024.

This was our first walk after a long winter hibernation... and it was a special one. In keeping with our movement's roots and new commitment to walk with intention, we walked in solidarity with Capetonian sex workers, many of whom have been violently attacked in this area. It was held in collaboration with our friends from SWEAT - the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce. They helped us identify a route through Belville where sex workers are often the target of police harassment and violence.

While Women Walk at Midnight reclaims the right to joy in walking at night, we also recognise that this is something many do for work and survival. It was good to walk together in solidarity for the right to safe public space for all of us who use the streets at night.

Thank you Belville, and thank you to SWEAT, for the opportunity to walk and learn in community.

Photos reflect some of the experiences on the night, with two bonus images of organisers enjoying a pre-walk Ethiopian feast at the highly recommended Yetembe restaurant!
